Music at Butler: Butler University Symphonic Wind Ensemble

November 18, 2021 @ 7:30pm

Masters of Disguise

For centuries composers have enjoyed the challenge of hiding various elements of their music from plain sight. They often cloak familiar melodies in unusual harmonies and rhythms, or break up a tune into fragments so small that they are virtually unrecognizable – at least until the composer wants them recognized! One of the grandest examples of this technique can be found in Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations, a title that makes clear the mystery that surrounds this set of “musical sketches” of the composer’s friends. The program also includes the music of Charles Ives, Vincent Persichetti, Scott Joplin, and Carolyn Bremer, as well as the world premiere of a new work by Butler composer Michael Schelle,  A Far Cry from Fairview, composed in 2020 in honor of the 100th anniversary of Butler Bands.
