Duckwall Artist Series: Richard Dole, bass trombone with Special Guests: Matthew Altizer, alto saxophone, Joshua Thompson, piano, and Royce Thrush, piano
This recital is a joint presentation by friends and radio show co-hosts Richard Dole and Matthew Altizer. (Their radio show Have You Heard airs every Wednesday night at 9pm on WICR 88.7fm and past shows can be found at www.haveyouheardjazz.com). This will be their second joint recital together and it is their privilege to present a wide variety of music.
Richard opens the evening with Concerto for Bass Trombone (1963) by Robert Spillman (b. 1936), accompanied by pianist Royce Thrush. Matthew, on alto saxophone, continues with the unaccompanied Phoenix (1983) by Ryō Noda (b. 1948). Matthew is then joined by the Paul Bro Saxophone Quartet (Bobby Case – soprano, Matthew – alto, Samuel Fritz – tenor, Steven Georges, bari) playing Mvt. I – Misterioso, and Mvt. 2 – Lent from the Quatuor de saxophones (1983) by Ida Gotkovsky (b. 1933). Richard will then be joined by pianist Joshua Thompson to play two art-songs, “A Good Assissination Should Be Quiet” (1977), by David N. Baker (1931 – 2012), and “Prayer” (from Nightsongs) (1996) by Leslie Adams (b. 1933).
