Religion Seminar Series: Non-Binary Gender Construction in Asian Religions

This event has been moved the Krannert Room of Clowes Memorial Hall. In the United States, contemporary public conversations about trans people and their rights often proceed as if the issue has been only recently discovered, and as if binary (male-female) conceptions of gender have in all times and places been the norm.  But there have for millennia been, and still are, many religions and societies that recognize and accommodate three or more genders (those of America’s own native peoples among them).  The speakers for this session will discuss examples from Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.
