Nick, the “idea man” in his fifth grade class, loves to think up subjects that throw his teacher, Mrs. Granger, off track so she doesn’t have time to give those notoriously long homework assignments. When Nick tries to engage her in a debate about “Where do words come from?” Mrs. Granger turns the tables and gives Nick the question as a research assignment. Thus begins Nick’s experiment with words and his power struggle with Mrs. Granger. In the end, Nick learns not only about the importance of words, but about the courage to stand up for himself. Adapted from the popular book by Andrew Clements, Frindle is sure to bring language and literacy center stage for your students.
